Shimmering heat, endless expanse. The desert seems infinite to us at first sight. Step by step a caravan drifts by, following a route taken since time immemorial. After walking for many hours we are still surrounded by sand, the horizon blurs in the distance. Walking at a constant pace forces us to reflect on ourselves. Then our gaze turns outward rather than inward. And suddenly we notice details: the special atmosphere in the morning or evening. Subtle traces of bugs in the desert sand. The play of light and shadow on a dune. The gorgeous colour of a cactus flower. Salt desert, rocky desert, sandy desert – the desert is a place of yearning.
