Still life painters seek to capture objects in all their beauty. A water bottle, a pitcher, flowers or fruit – everyday things are what matter here. Standing out against a dark background, the flowers in Baroque illustrations are lifelike, with some individual stems lying on the table as if they landed there by chance. As different again are the modern still lifes of a Van Gogh or, even more distinct, the “Blue Vase with Oranges” by Alexej von Jawlensky, whose two-dimensional painting in fiery colours seeks to be a depiction of the essence of the objects illustrated rather than a lifelike portrayal. Think about the colours as well when choosing your still life wallpaper: whilst more lifelike motifs blend in with the room, wallpapers in strong colours draw all the attention to themselves.
