The sumptuous pictures of the Italian Renaissance still appeal to us today. This is down to their harmonious composition, the depiction of lovely women and glittering festivals, not to mention their wonderful colours: softly glowing bodies stand out against a dark background and draw all the attention to themselves. Raphael’s two cherubs, an excerpt from the “Sistine Madonna”, are surely the best-known motif from this era. We are impressed by the details in the painting by Canaletto: he shows us 18th-century Venice in all its splendour and variety; we see each individual archway as if we ourselves were there. Wallpaper art such as this is a stylish and unusual wall decoration for anyone who loves Venice.
